Peter’s Story6 Sep, 2018
It’s not something we like to talk about. It’s not always something that is easy to understand or comprehend. Yet the reality is, so often we are faced with the harsh realities of suicide.
It will likely come as no surprise to you that suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44.1
Every day we spend time in prayer at our Head Office and almost every week we find ourselves praying for clients who have considered or attempted suicide.
In fact, according to our CAP Client Survey 1 in 3 of our clients considered or attempted suicide before seeking help from CAP. Debt and despair go hand in hand. The harassment from collection agencies can seriously damage the mental health of people who are already vulnerable. Overwhelmed by debt, some feel like suicide is the only option.
This is not okay. We want to make sure every Aussie struggling with debt knows that there is a solution. That they are not alone. That there is hope.
That’s why today we want to share a story of transformation and hope, through CAP.
“My marriage had separated, and my two boys were living with their mum. I wasn’t great at keeping track of my money. Financially everything seemed okay until the builder for an investment property I had went bankrupt. After that everything fell apart. I had pain in my chest worrying about where the next dollar was going to come from. I thought about suicide. I felt like I was a failure. I felt like I’d lost all my self-worth.
On my first visit with CAP my Debt Coach asked me to take out my credit cards. We got out scissors and cut them all up. After, I just sat there and cried.
When you’ve never budgeted it’s very hard to adjust because you just don’t know anything about it. My Debt Coach came up with ideas that I’d never thought about. I changed my lifestyle and my spending habits. I’ve even done a budget for my eldest son now. He was spending money as quickly as he earned it. He was doing exactly what I used to do and he had no idea.
Now, I’m debt free and I’ve recommitted my life back to God. I can see what God has done and I’m not thinking about dying anymore. I feel very happy. CAP has saved me from possible death and I owe my life to them.”
