Serena's Story

My husband was the main breadwinner in our family and he went into business for himself. Things didn’t come to fruition like we thought; the finances didn’t come in and the debts accumulated.

We tried to fix our problem by borrowing and swapping different debts and then had to borrow even more money which made our situation worse.

Not long after that our youngest child was diagnosed with leukaemia and this actually prevented us from earning any income.

I was struggling. I had creditors ringing and felt nervous and sick when answering the phone and picking up the mail. On top of all this there were threats of our house being repossessed.

My husband ended up leaving us and I found it very hard knowing where to go and who to ask for help. Family and friends tried to ‘band-aid’ the situation but I could never find a real solution.

At one point I had to stand in food stamp lines so I was able to have enough money to drive my youngest child to hospital for treatment and pay the bills which were required.

I found it very hard to sleep at night and was really anxious. I started to suffer from heart palpitations all the time and had a feeling of not being able to breathe.

I needed to provide for my beautiful children but I was unable to.

I finally phoned CAP for help and the case worker came to see me in my home which was fantastic. They were very kind, friendly and have worked through many issues with me.

My faith and hope have both been renewed and now I have a future again! But the most exciting thing of all is that my daughter has recently been given the all clear from cancer!

I will eventually pay back all of our debts and will be able to provide for my children again.

Thank you CAP!
